Non-Newtonian Fluids September 12, 2009

Have you ever tried mixing cornstarch & water together? Well, you should. You won’t get silly putty…. you’ll get a non-newtonian fluid! That is, “a fluid whose flow property are not described by a single constant value of viscosity.” In simpler terms, it means it’s really cool! If you apply sudden force to it, it’ll act like a solid. if you just let it sit, it’ll act like a liquid. Check it out:

So I have an Arab friend who told me that in Syria, when taxicabs go in reverse, they play the Tetris theme song! How awesome is that?!!

Monotremes are mammals that lay eggs.

Really? Lay eggs? Are you sure they aren’t some kind of reptile?

I’m serious. Monotremes still fit all of the other criteria for being a mammal, though.

The Defining Characteristics of Mammals:

-hair

-vertebrae

-sweat glands

-three middle ear bones

-neocortex region of the brain

-mammary glands in females

…&, there you have it. Although most mammals do indeed give birth to live young, this isn’t true for all of ‘em.

Curiously, in addition to laying eggs, monotremes have just one opening for reproduction, urination, & defecation – this single duct is called a cloaca.

There are only five species of monotremes (various kinds of echidna & platypus), & they’re all from Australia.

The Legend of the Bicorn & the Chichevache July 13, 2009

I just found out about this – the medieval legend of the bicorn & the chichevache! The bicorn is something like a two-horned unicorn, & is quite well-fed & plump – well, its got to be, seeing as it feeds on doting husbands, right?! On the other hand, the chichevache is a beast constantly on the verge of starvation, as it only feeds on obedient wives. Ha, ha!
